Sundial Peak & Viewpoint & Mt Rosea, Grampians Nat Pk, Vic, Australia

2017 December:  Day trip - Sundial Peak & Viewpoint & Mt Rosea, Grampians National Park, Vic, Australia

Prolog

Grampians National Park (Gariwerd, its aboriginal name; or commonly called The Grampians) is a series of sandstone ridges at the tail end (southern end) of the Australian Great Dividing Range.

The most beautiful, and hence popular spots are around "The Grand Canyon", "Wonderland" and "Pinnacle" areas. But they are usually full of people, a bane to us hikers who avoid the crowd like the plague.

And so, today, I go to climb :
    - Sundial Peak ... 802 meters in elevation
    - Viewpoint
    - Mt Rosea ... 1009 meters
Hardly a soul on that part of the National Park ... Perfect !

Map

The paper map that I have is "Northern Grampians" by Spatial Vision, 2nd edition, Copyright 2014.

The relevant part of the map is reproduced below:
- The 3 blue arrows point to, from left to right:
1  Delleys Dell (by the east side of Silverband Road C218)
2  Sundial Peak Lookout (not to be confused with Sundial Peak)
       3  Viewpoint
- Sundial Peak is the small "+" sign just north-west of Sundial Peak Lookout.
- Delleys Dell used to be a carpark. It is now just an open grass area, no longer a carpark.

GPS tracklog file & route

The GPX tracklog file of the walk can be downloaded from:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_GFHbFyDe8IRicPSaZia7tbhMxAjVClb/view?usp=sharing

The same tracklog is displayed in the map below as blue dots, clockwise direction:
- The 7 blue arrows point to, from left to right:
1  On its left (west), there is a dis-used foot track. On its right (east), it is bushbashing.
2  I lost the Mt Rosea Track here and end up bushbashing towards the blue arrow on the left.
3  Delleys Dell (by the east side of Silverband Road C218)
4  Cross an unnamed creek around here. If you are here, keep as upstream as possible to avoid the thick scrub.
5  Rocky outcrops on the slope north of 767-meter hill
6  Sundial Peak Lookout (not to be confused with Sundial Peak)
       7  Viewpoint
- Sundial Peak is the small "+" sign just north-west of Sundial Peak Lookout.
- Delleys Dell used to be a carpark. It is now just an open grass area, no longer a carpark.
( Note: If the map below is not as clear as you wish it to be, you can download a clearer map from:

-  Walk in a clockwise direction
-  To Sundial Peak Lookout
-  Climb up Sundial Peak summit
-  To Viewpoint
-  Walk on a dis-used foot track to Delleys Dell

-  To rocky outcrops on the north-side slope of 767-meter hill
-  Finish at Sundial Carpark

Timeline & Distance

Park car at Sundial Carpark, at end of Sundial Road, Bellfield, Vic.

For the purpose of GPS recording, the start and end of the walk is at about 50 meters south-south-east of the carpark.

08:50   0.0 km   Start at about 50 meters south-south-east of Sundial Carpark
At a junction - One foot track goes to Sundial Peak. The other goes to Lakeview Lookout.
08:53   0.2 km   At a junction - One foot track goes to Sundial Peak. The other goes to Rosea Carpark.
09:15   1.65km  At a junction - One foot track goes to Sundial Peak. The other goes to Lake Bellfield.
09:31   2.05km  At Sundial Peak summit, 802 meters

09:35   2.05km  Leave Sundial Peak summit
09:59   2.4 km   Back at the junction as at 09:15
10:01   2.55km  At a junction - One foot track goes to Lake Bellfield. The other goes to Delleys Dell.
10:12   3.05km  At Viewpoint

10:20   3.1 km   Leave Viewpoint
10:30   3.65km  Back at the junction as at 10:01; start walking towards Delleys Dell
11:02   5.05km  At a place where I need to cross an unnamed creek

Lost the foot track just prior to crossing the creek.
Try to find a way to push through very dense scrubs around the banks of the creek.
Eventually, I find a way to cross it.
But I think the foot track probably goes further upstream before crossing the creek.

11:12   5.25km  Resume walking to cross the creek
11:16   5.35km  At Delleys Dell by the east side of Silverband Road (C218)
11:26   5.65km  Leave Silverband Road and start walking on Burma Fireline
(I may not have left Silverband Road and enter Burma Fireline at the proper junction.)
12:01   7.95km  At a junction where Burma Fireline meets Mt Rosea Track
Going west along Mt Rosea track is to Mt Rosea ... this is where I'm going.
(Going east is to the southern tip of Lake Bellfield.)
12:25   9.45km  Stop for lunch

Lunch

12:35   9.45km  Resume walking
13:29  11.05km  At Mt Rosea summit, 1009 meters

13:35  11.1 km   Leave Mt Rosea summit
14:10  12.25km  At where there was an old foot track down the steep east side cliffs to Rosea Carpark

Try to find the old track.
Can't find it.  Perhaps destroyed by a landslide ???

14:32  12.75km  Resume walking along Mt Rosea Track
14:35  12.95km  Lost Mt Rosea Track here.

Go on a wrong way for a while before I realize it.
Retrace steps back to where I lost the track.

14:48  13.25km  Back at the spot as at 14:35.  Resume walking on Mt Rosea Track.
14:53  13.35km  Lost Mt Rosea Track. Start walking off-track ... some parts are unpleasant bushbashing in dense scrub.
15:21  13.9 km   Meet up with a disused foot track (I think it is disused because it is not on the map.)
15:22  13.95km  Stop for a rest

Afternoon Tea

15:31  13.95km  Resume walking
15:53  14.5 km   Meet up with Mt Rosea Track
16:31  16.85km  At Rosea carpark; and start to walk on a track (called management road) to Sundial Carpark
16:54  18.05km  Go off-track and start to scramble up towards rock outcrops on north side of a 767-meter hill

Explore around the rock outcrops, but not to the top of the hill.

17:11  18.3 km  Back down the slope and meet up with the track to Sundial Carpark
17.16  18.7 km  At the junction as at 08:53 - One track goes to Sundial Carpark. The other goes to Sundial Peak.
17:19  18.9 km  End at where the GPS recording started ... ie about 50 meters south-south-east of Sundial Carpark

==============================================

Total:  8 hrs 29 mins
18.9 km  Distance is from Google Earth.
??.? km  Distance from my Garmin GPS is not reliable.

Temperature & water

I didn't check the weather before the trip. It turns out to be a hot 37 degrees Celsius in The Grampians. I have 4 litres of water in the backpack. It is not quite enough and I have to ration myself carefully to get through the 8 and a half hours of walking.

I've left Sundial Peak.  Next destination is Viewpoint.

17)  Here, I am back at the junction of photo #2.
- The boulders in this pic is just beyond the right edge of that photo.
- This time, I'll take the lower track (of photo #2) towards Lake Bellfield. I won't go all the way there. In about 550 meters, I'll veer off the main track and head for Viewpoint.

18)  Flower by the side of the track to Viewpoint ...
If you know the name of this yellow flower, please let me know.

19)  If you know the name of this small white flower, please let me know.

- Continuation to the right of this pic is #26, thus completing a 360-degree panorama.

29)  Still at Viewpoint ~~~
Lake Bellfield

To Delleys Dell & Burma Fireline

After Viewpoint, it is to Delleys Dell and Burma Fireline.
    - Delleys Dell used to be a carpark by the east side of Silverband Road (C218). Now, it is just an open grass area, no longer a carpark.
    - On old maps, Burma Fireline was labelled as Burma Track.

30)  There is a foot track, from the east, approaching Delleys Dell and the northern end of Burma Fireline. The foot track is no longer printed on recent maps.  Presumably the Victorian National Parks authorities don't want us to walk along it anymore. However I decide to have a go ... because it is a short cut to Mt Rosea. The track is in pretty good condition as shown by the 2 pics below.

31)  Along the foot track ... Onopordum acanthium (Scotch or Scottish Thistle, Cotton Thistle) ~~~
Native to Europe and Western Asia ...
...from the Iberian Peninsula, east to Kazakhstan, and north to central Scandinavia.
Widely naturalised elsewhere, with especially large populations present in the United States and Australia.
In Australia, it is mostly regarded as a weed.

Near Delleys Dell

When the foot track approaches Delleys Dell, and just prior to crossing an unnamed creek, it disappears ... Well, I lost it ... Probably because the track is obscured by overgrown scrub.

When you are here, keep as upstream of the creek as possible before attempting to cross it.  (ie Keep to the right when coming from the direction of Sundial Peak.)  Otherwise the scrub is too thick for you to bash through.

Burma Fireline & Mt Rosea Track

I've passed Delleys Dell and is now on Burma Fireline.

32)  The 2 pics below are typical conditions of the track to Mt Rosea.
- Upper pic: Burma Fireline (labelled as Burma Track in old maps)
- Lower pic: Mt Rosea Track

33)  From Burma Fireline, looking across Dairy Creek at Sundial Peak and Viewpoint
- Upper pic: The 2 red arrows point to, from left to right:
1 Sundial Peak is somewhere behind the arrow.
2 Viewpoint is not far behind the arrow.
- Lower pic: Red arrow: Sundial Peak

34)  Climbing up Mt Rosea range along Mt Rosea Track (Actually, Mt Rosea range is part of a much longer Serra Range.)

Flowers along Mt Rosea Track to Mt Rosea summit

35)  Wahlenbergia (Bluebell) ... but which species ?

36)  If you know the name of this purple flower, please let me know.

37)  Brunonia australis (Blue Pincushion)

38)  If you know the name of this yellow flower, please let me know.

39)  Leptospermum (Tea Tree) ... but which species ?

40)  If you know the name of this shrub, please let me know. It has yellow flowers.

50)  Me at the summit ~~~
The tree on the right edge is the same tree in photo #48's middle pic.

51)  This yellow flower is growing at the summit ... Same flower as in photo #24.
If you know its name, please let me know.

Leave Mt Rosea summit

52)  I've left Mt Rosea summit, now looking back at it.

53)  Bush sculpture  :-)
This pic is taken very close to where I was standing when taking the previous pic.

Along Mt Rosea range to Rosea Carpark

After Mt Rosea summit, it is to Rosea Carpark along the top of Mt Rosea range.

54)  Some interesting rocks ~~~
The rocks in the upper pic are the same as the rocks in the background of the lower pic.

55)  Scenery along the way ~~~
- The background of the 2 pics are similar, as both pics are taken close to each other.
- Lower pic:
       • Blue arrows: Mount Rosea Track ... heading to Rosea Carpark.
       • Red circle: Sometimes, there are yellow metal markers to guide you. Don't rely on them though; often they are not there.

56)  More Interesting rock formations along the way ~~~
The 2 pics below are not of the same rock formation. The lower pic is a further 2 minutes along the way.

57)  The Mt Rosea Track goes through a short tunnel.

61)  Immediately afterwards is a foot bridge

62)  Immediately after the foot bridge, I come to a cliff edge and an interesting rock.
This pic together with the 3 pics in photo #63 form a 360-degree panorama.

63)  The previous pic plus the 3 pics below form a 360-degree panorama.
- Upper pic: (Continuation to the right of previous pic)
       • The 4 red arrows point to, from left to right:

Note 1
At 2:12pm I try to find a foot track which was shown on older maps and which goes directly to Rosea Carpark by descending the steep cliffs on the east side of Mt Rosea range. But I can't find it. Perhaps a landslide had destroyed it ???

So at 2:33pm I give up on that idea and keep going along the Mt Rosea Track.

Note 2
After Mt Rosea summit, I lost the Mt Rosea Track a few times. But every time I realized my mistake and found the track again. To the Victorian National Parks authoriies ... better signage would help !

However at 2:53pm I inadvertently miss the track again. But this time, I can't be bothered to backtrack, so I just go bushbashing westward, reasoning that I'll eventually meet up with the track again.

Well, it is a mistake, as at some places, the bush is atrociously thick to bash through. Thankfully, half an hour later, I meet up with an old disused foot track that is no longer shown on recent maps. Not to worry, it is track and much better than bushbashing. And a further half an hour later, at 3:53pm I am back on the proper Mt Rosea Track.

69)  180-degree panorama ~~~
- Upper pic: The centre of this pic is towards west.
       • The 2 red arrows point to, from left to right:
            1 Tower Hill
            2 Stony Peak
       • Blue arrow: Mt Rosea Track ... I just walked along there.
- Lower pic: Towards north-ish (Continuation to the right of the upper pic)
       • Blue arrow: Mt Rosea Track ... I'm heading in that direction.

70)  I've climb down from the top of Mt Rosea range. The Mt Rosea Track shown here is about 1 km west of Rosea Carpark.

Rosea Carpark

71)  At Rosea Carpark

To Sundial Carpark

72)  Foot track from Rosea Carpark to Sundial Carpark

The slope of 767-meter hill

73)  As the afternoon is still early and Sundial Carpark is not far away, I decide to scramble up the rocky slope on the north side of the 767-meter hill between Rosea Carpark and Sundial Carpark ... to check out whether there is any view from the slope.

74)  Well, here is the 180-degree view from top of the rocks of the previous pic:
- Upper pic: Red arrow: Stony Peak
- Lower pic: (Continuation to the right of the upper pic)
       • The 4 red arrows point to, from left to right:
            1 Bellfield Peak ... north-east-ish

            3 Lake Fyans
4 I'll go to this rocky outcrop next.

75)  180-degree view from the rocky outcrop of the previous pic ... slightly better view than the previous 2 pics ~~~
- Upper pic:
- Lower pic: (Continuation to the right of the upper pic)
       • The 4 red arrows point to, from left to right:
            1 Bellfield Peak ... north-east-ish
            2 Boronia Peak ... north-east-ish
            3 Lake Fyans
            4 Lake Bellfield
       • Small red dot: Sundial Carpark ... towards east
I decide not to climb to the top of the hill ... the view from there may not be good due to all the trees around.

And so, after photos were taken from the rocky outcrop, I call it a day and climb down the slope.

76)  Climbing down from the rocky outcrop ~~~
- Red arrow: That's where I was.

Sundial Carpark

77)  Back at Sundial Carpark where my car is parked (red circle) ~~~
Note the dark grey car next to mine ... see photo #78.

78)  Woody of Toy Story on top of the car parked next to mine ... so cute !

Post Script - Lakeview Lookout

This trip starts at 8:50am from Sundial Carpark.

Before then, from 8:16am to 8:50am, I went to Lakeview Lookout east of the carpark. Photographs and trip report on the lookout are in my blog:
